The white pagoda and 700,000 years of history

Dayao - 700,000 years of history
Bai ta, which means 'white pagoda' in Chinese, is home to a - wait for it! - white pagoda!
I haven't visited this place (although I have passed through it by train a number of times), but am keen to provide some information on some of the many sights in Inner Mongolia.
Baita lies south-east of Hohhot's airport, some 15km east of the city centre, and is reachable by taxi or by train. The Lonely PLanet guide is wrong: there are plenty of trains that stop at Baita in both directions.
The path up to Da Yao
There is more to Baita than meets the eye though. There is actually more than just the pagoda. It is the last remaining structure of an ancient town that predates Altan Khan's Hohhot. The town was called Fengzhou and was important enough to justify an official history (in eight volumes!).
I know little about the town (watch this space though!) but I know that the layout of the village can be seen in the fields near the pagoda, so that would give a second reason for visiting this small town. It would be very easy to visit Baita on the same trip to see the paleolithic and neolitihic sites at Day Yao Cun, which lie to the north-west, in the foothills of the Daqingshan.
I have written up information about Dayao and Baheshao in this section on Baita because the former do not appear in the VT database. I warn you this is real off-the-beaten track stuff!
