Hunting the Great Wall in Tumd Zuoqi

by mke1963 - last update: Aug 30, 2004

The Great Wall in central Inner Mongolia
Tumd Zuoqi (or Tumd Left Banner) turns up in the VT database as Biqeq, presumably a variation on the alternative name of Hohhot-Bikeqi.
There is not a great deal to see in Tumd Zuoqi, as it is slowly being incorporated into the enormous development zone that extends west of Hohhot along the highway and the railway line.
All along the G101 road, to the north, you can catch glimpses of the Zhao Great Wall, one of the earlier Great Walls (see my VT entry on the Zhao Great Wall in Hohhot).
There are only fleeting glimpses from a car window, but if you can persuade your driver to stop, you can turn north for a ew hundred metres and find the wall. This is best done when there is a bridge under or over the express Hohhot-Baotou highway (do not use this road for travelling to Tumd Zuoqi as you can't get off it for ages!)
The wall here is a mound 2 to 5 metres high.
The best way of finding your very own, "hidden" and secret section of the wall is to travel along this highway and just pick a track up into the foothills of the Daqingshan.
The photo here is a map from the Iner Mongolia Provincial Museum that shows the approximate routing of this and other lines of the wall. You will need additional maps to track down the actual location though!
Legend for the map above
The map does not show the Qin Great Wall along the Shanxi border, nor the Jurchen/Yan wall south of Xilinhot.
The second image shows the legend to the same map.
A ruined temple at Lamadong Monastery
Under Biqeq, I have added information specifically on the Lamadong Monastery and a small section of the Zhao wall passed on the way there.
This area is just an hour by car from central Hohhot, and is great hiking country.

Pros:"Zhao Great Wall; secluded monastery"
Cons:"Difficult to find"
In A Nutshell:"Away from it all in the Daqingshan foothills"
