The bright capital of Hainan island, lying off the south-west coast of China is well worth a few days visit.
There is plenty to entertain kids, enough architecture and culture for the more discerning, and extinct volcanoes, mangrove swamps, empty beaches for those more interested in the natural side of life.
Museums, zoos, (Chinese style) theme parks, temples...including a few off the beaten track...and plenty of longer day-trips possible make this a great location for a week.

Plan your trip well though. The knowledge of local travel agents, tour guides and hotels is absolutely minimal. You will have to show them where to go!

I know that Hotel. Would not stay there again. I always stay at teh Sheraton. It is newly open, but a fantastic hotel with true Star facilities. Haikou becomes very nice and in and around plenty to do I agree.

I wouldn't have expected mangrove swamps in China! Too bad about the hotel, the island sounds really nice other than that.

thanks for the tip on hotel! we were just going to book this hotel for our trip next month.. now we should change to another one!
