Xihu Travel Guide: 1 reviews and 3 photos

Xihu is a tiny oasis on the road from the railway station at Liuyuan and Dunhuang at about km80. The local people farm cotton over a few small kilometres of more fertile ground than the vast surrounding Anxi desert.

The main reason for pointing it out is that the Han Great Wall crosses the road just to the south at km83 and continues, with big weathered watchtowers following the road (on both sides) until around km92. Access by vehicle is not as easy as it might sound because there are pipelines alongside the road (pipelines leave a soft spoil ridge of excess gravel and stone). Out here, especially on the remnants of the wall to the west, it is easy to imagine the lonely life of a border guard, looking out towards the desret with its unknown peoples, tribes and beasts.
