"Jingtai" Yitiaoshan by mke1963

Yitiaoshan Travel Guide: 0 reviews and 3 photos

Yitiaoshan is better known as Jingtai, and sits in the northern part of Gansu province. To the north are the southern fringes of the Gobi Desert, while to the east is Ningxia Hui Autonomous Province. Jingtai is also a county, stretching from the Huang He (Yellow River) across almost as far as the Qilianshan mountains. Most of the county is either upland stony drylands or, in the southern part, loess plateau. It is a poor county (one of China's official 592 'poverty' counties) with long distances between small villages and stony fields etched out of the hard ground wherever undergound water can be channelled. Wheat, potatoes and barley are the main crops, with maize found near the Yellow River.

Many of the villages and even individual houses are heavily fortified as this was on the very edge of Chinese civilization through the millennia. Indeed, the Great Wall runs west-east through the county, well to the north of Jingtai town. It can be seen clearly to the south of the road that runs from Jingtai to Wuwei.

In the south-east part of the county, more easily accessible from the city of Baiyin, is the recently opened Yellow River Stone Forest, an impressive landscape of huge red sandstone cliffs hanging over a tight bend of the Huanghe. The authorities have officially opened three deep gorges for exploration, although there is nothing to stop visitors from heading into other gorges.

I see "Oil Guesthouse" in your main photo; quite an attractive name for accomodations. I like those three wheeled cars; one less tire to change when you're halfway between Nowhere and the bombing range.
