Despite its reputation as the "Rose City", Toulouse is actually the city of violets - as can be seen at the airport with its special 'violet souvenir shop'.
Toulouse, once derided for a being a parochial, provincial city is enjoying a renaissance and is one of France's fastest growing cities. Its renewal comes thanks to long term investment by the national and regional government in the aerospace and aviation industries, but also in high-tech industries that are piling into the suburban science parks and around the ring roads.
More than 400,000 people live in the city, with another 600,000 in the surrounding towns, most of which have merged into the urban agglomeration. Despite this, many of these former separate towns are, themselves, not unpleasant places.
