Altun Ha is the most extensively excavated ruin in Belize, and was a major ceremonial center during the Classic Period. It not only served as one of the ceremonial centers, but as a vital hub for trade with the interior Mayan cities.
This site is where the famous "Jade Head" which represents the Mayan sun god was found. It is the largest jade carving ever found in Mayan ruins.
Altun Ha historyAltun Ha, was first settled somewhere around 250 BC, with construction of the buildings beginning in 100 AD and continuing throughout the Classic period that ended in the 10th century. Some 10,000 Maya lived in and around Altun Ha.
Altun Ha is about a 45 minute drive north of Belize City and well worth the visit. Although there is no regularly scheduled transportation, some tour groups can offer access. I rented a taxi for the day, and split between several travelers, that option, although a little more spendy than other options, was affordable and offered maximum freedom.
