Take your pick! - Hoogeveen

Take your pick!

Subway: There are better sandwich establishments!

Some people consider the Subway their favorite chain by far. You are able to eat at Subways from the Florida Keys to Reykjavik! It's Subway. But hey? My opinion is that you have to consider that it a franchise and therefore all the Subways should be the same. For this one in Hoogeveen it is no different. I've eaten there a few time times, together with my colleagues for a lunch and I must say that there are better lunch encounters to attend to. Actually, the last time we went here, they had run out of my favorite bread (Italian herbs and spices), so if anything, this might lower this Subway's rating compared to others in the world.

But anyway their ingredients are 100% fresh 100% of the time. But the key thing is the staff. They are just charming people, look like they're happy to be there, and they have the skills to make a nice sandwich. The last downside to this place is the standard bright yellowness of it; rather glaring.

Getting started at The Postkantoor. - Hoogeveen

Getting started at The Postkantoor.

Grand Café Het Postkantoor: Dining industrial style.

Right at the former post office (dutch word is postkantoor) this very nice grand café has opened its doors. I still am able to remember the fact that I used to buy my stamps right in this building. A very cool thing is that the owner kept the enormous space that was available intact. The interior is in a beautiful industrial style, a concept based upon the space being honest with its components. Very well done.

But it is of course also about the food, the entire experience. When I ate at the grand café Het Postkantoor with my girlfriend Paulien I had a nice wild duck with tasty port sauce. Paulien was served the small sole fish with a nice taste of dragon. All product were freshly made and the service was good, maybe a bit theatrical at some times. It made us wonder whether the grand café wants to spread the message that they are a bit on the top of culinary Hoogeveen. You will find this statement back in the prices of the courses. For us a bit on the pricey side to be honest.

Address: Van Echtenstraat 35, Hoogeveen.

Me and the boys having diner at the grandcafe. - Hoogeveen

Me and the boys having diner at the grandcafe.

Grandcafe The Pub: Great atmosphere!

Grandcafé de Pub in Hoogeveen is a picturesque family run village pub with a friendly welcome serving a selection of traditional beers, wines and spirits and good homemade food. It serves traditional pub food, with a full selection of meat, fish and vegetarian dishes, as well as chef's specials. A friend of mine has gluten intolerance and we learned that they also cater for special dietary requirements, such as gluten intolerance.

The restaurant part together with the bar area can seat about 40 to 50 covers. Something to remember is that you can have your diner till 22:00 o'clock, because after that time alle the furniture will be removed. This in order to change the place in a dance hall. So probably it is a good place for a complete night out. First a good diner and after that a nice dance.

Let´s get it started. - Hoogeveen

Let´s get it started.

Eetcafé De Beurs.: A household name across Hoogeveen.

In a walking distance from the famous cinema Luxor, you will find steakhouse De Beurs. As a medium budget restaurant De Beurs strives for affordable quality that money can pay. Additionally, being located in the city centre and therefore walking distance from the "places to be" such as the theater De Tamboer, it is the ideal location for your diner during a holiday stay. The management is able to assist you in Dutch, as well as English and German, so do not hesitate to drop by.

The medium sized restaurant and lounge can comfortably fit 40 people, and the competent and friendly staff is always ready to take your order or request. Special events are organized weekly, as well as a daily special on the menu.

Favorite Dish: As an appetizer I can advice the Smoked Pacific Salmon, continu with the Cajun Ribeye Steak and finish with the New York Cheesecake! Enjoy.

The beautiful interior of the restaurant. - Hoogeveen

The beautiful interior of the restaurant.

Het huis met de Duivengaten: Excellent French kitchen!

Right at the city centre you'll find the restaurant Het huis met de Duivengaten. It has a very tastefull arrangement and offers about 40 seats for guests. The restaurant is situated in the oldest premises of Hoogeveen, about 300 years old. In 1972 the entire building has been renovated and has been restored to its original conditions as much as possible, inclusive the 9 pigeon holes at the front side of the facade.

Ever since november 2003 hostess Karianne van Asselt and chef Maarten Dragt are running the restaurant. The welcome we receive everytime is warm. The menu is mainly French oriented, but has also some national and international influences. Twice a year the composition of the menu card is changed and of course extended with specific menu's during the 4 seasons of the year.

Inside De Herberg. - Hoogeveen

Inside De Herberg.

De Herberg: Every 6 to 8 weeks a surprise

This great restaurant is located at a very beautiful spot. Just outside the city in the woods called Spaarbankbos. Just because of this you'll find some peace and quite that you're looking for whenever you want to escape the stress of the city. Coziness, nice food and easiness are the basis of this fancy restaurant.

The restaurant is French oriented, but is also influenced by a lot of other international kitchens. The cook is using fresh products and the sauces, cakes, desserts, et cetera are all home made. Around the restaurant there is a nice terrace, where you can experience the real atmosphere of the Hoogeveen woods and drinking a good glass of wine. The menu changes every 6 to 8 weeks. So ... it pays off to visit it regularly.

Opening hours:
Teusday - Friday lunch from 12:00u - 14:30u
Teusday - Saturday dinner from 17:30u - ?
Closed at Sunday and Monday

Favorite Dish: Let the cook surprise you! He can make you real nice fruits de mer, lobster thermidor, Alaska red King Crabs, Dutch oysters and beautifull fish platters. Mjummie ...

Sam, Relinde and Iris enjoying the chocolate. - Hoogeveen

Sam, Relinde and Iris enjoying the chocolate.

De Vliegenier: Great spot to relax.

Usually eating at an airport means food courts, candy bars and maybe a sorry piece of last minute fruit. So the general idea at an airport is that it's what everyone loves to hate - the half stale bread roll wrapped in meters of plastic, stuffed with yesterday's ham and tomorrow's tomatoes, with a dash of dead lettuce on top. But with current airport security measures travelers arrive aerlier before their departure time and airlines serving less on board, travelers have more time and a greater need to eat at the airport.

The airport food in Hoogeveen is not normally renowned for its taste, originailty or freshness, but thankfully things have come a long way on the food front in Hoogeveen airport since the days of the dodgy bread roll. At The Vliegenier the coffee is the real italian job, and the ciabattas, toasted paninis and mezzalunas tastle like proper food, not cardboard cut outs. They also sell pastries, homemade sandwiches and salads that are freshly prepared on site. The hot food selection includes a traditional English breakfast and the soup of the day is normally a good bet during the cold winter season. Just a nice spot to eat and see airplanes landing and taking off!

Favorite Dish: Just try the steaming hot, freshly baked quiche!

At a terrace in front of De Koffiepot. - Hoogeveen

At a terrace in front of De Koffiepot.

De Koffiepot: Unique for Hoogeveen

Right at the heart of the city centre of Hoogeveen you’ll find this so called coffeehouse / brasserie De Koffiepot. Maybe the name coffeehouse or brasserie doesn’t do justice to this great place. De Koffiepot is serving down-to-earth ultra tasty cuisine, using the finest local produce. The real taste of some fine food is in the house ladies and gents! There are a variety of menus like the Seasonal Menu, the Lunch Menu et cetera.

The stylish décor, a warm and cosy compact eating area and lighting certainly add to the stylish atmosphere to give the old historical building a certain ‘wow’ factor. Maybe that’s why I like brasseries. Whenever I've noticed a person drinking alone in a brasserie their friends soon arrive, and cheeks are kissed. I think they're better for socialising than bistros or cafés – the kind of places where a couple might stand up and waltz, and intellectuals come to eat when there's nothing on the telly. So I’m always looking forward to visit De Koffiepot.

Favorite Dish: Just try the hot meat sandwich. Its'great!

Yeah ... just the right food for Sam! - Hoogeveen

Yeah ... just the right food for Sam!

Whip Inn De Weide: Just a simple take out.

Take-out food is often fast food from a globalized chain or franchise, they serve traditional food, which is sometimes but by no means always of high quality. Examples include neighbourhood fish and chip shops in the UK, Australia and New Zealand; sandwiches sold by delis in the U.S.; kebabs sold in many countries; and the wide range of sausage-based snacks sold from stalls in German cities. The Whip Inn in Hoogeveen is a fine example of a franchise operation which is part of a restaurant chain and has standardized foodstuffs shipped to the counter from a central locations. It also provides table service, but not too many costumers do undertake that service. Like any fast food chain the food is prepared and served very quickly.

In The Netherlands we have our own types of fast food. A Dutch fast food meal often consists of a portion of French fries (called friet or patat) with a sauce and a meat product. The most common sauce to accompany French fries is mayonnaise. Sometimes the fries are served with combinations of sauces, most famously speciaal (special): mayonnaise, with (spiced) ketchup and chopped onions; and oorlog (literally "war"): mayonnaise and peanut sauce (sometimes also with ketchup and chopped onions). The meat product is usually a deep fried snack; this includes the frikandel (a deep fried skinless minced meat sausage), and the kroket (deep fried meat ragout covered in breadcrumbs).

Favorite Dish: I definately like the fries speciaal (special): mayonnaise, with (spiced) ketchup and chopped onions served with a frikandel (a deep fried skinless minced meat sausage).

Address: De Weide 23, 7908AB Hoogeveen.

Comparison: less expensive than average

Directions: The Whip Inn is located throughout the city of Hoogeveen. The Whip Inn De Weide is situated at the eastern part of town at the shopping mall called De Weide.

Jeroen is enjoying supper. - Hoogeveen

New York Plaza: Getting better every year!

The first capital of the United States has been established in 1609. Henri Hudson, an English man in service of the Dutch Vereenigde Oostindische Company (VOC) discovered the place he named Manhattan. On the 11th of September of that year he sailed upon a River which now carries his name: the Hudson.

The current New York is a mixture of various cultures. The Italian, French, Mexican and of course also Dutch kitchen is all component of the unique dining experience of the New Yorkers. The card of New York Plaza has been inspired by this particular dining culture of the sparkling metropolis and we could taste this mixture of The Big Apple. The wine card has also been composed with care. The wines have been exclusively selected on the basis of the own experiences of the owners in the city of New York.

Favorite Dish: We had a choice of a 3 course menu with several starters, main menus and desserts, a kind of composing our own menu. For a starter we had the beautiful Carpaccio of salmon. It was an amazing dish! We must admit that the restaurant gets better every year!
