It's a must do to visit the area between the river Ribeira do Sao Gomes, the ocean and the Forte de Sao Tiago called "Zona Velha", the Old Zone. Funchal's most charming district has a lot of bars and restaurants. Enough where you can enjoy lunches or snacks and drinks. Most are centered around squares, but in the little cobbled alleyways there are plenty of choices too.

Our reason to have a seat at Villa Caffe wasn't that difficult to guess; from that terrace we had a magnificent view at the beautiful Mercado dos Lavradores. We immediately noticed they had two menu cards, one with a rather large menu and one with special prices for lunch only. So we can invite you to have your lunch here, as it's quite an inexpensive place to eat some good food.

Favorite Dish: We were a little bored with the samey Funchal menus and felt free to order a pizza and some pasta. We liked it a lot and it accompanied our cold beer very well! :)

It's great to visit the Funchal Promenade. Just take a stroll from the Marino to the Forte de Sao Tiago for a great view of Funchal town and its bay. But not only walking around is great, it's maybe even better to sit on a terrace and watch the entire world go by. Hot sun, cold beer, my daughter and my beautiful wife next to me, what else could I ever wish for?

At the Promenade is a variety of places to eat, ranging from upmarket and overpriced restaurants to smaller places where the locals sit and eat. We sat down at Casa Madeirense as we were walking along the seafront and already saw all the chairs and tables out front and then we only needed to climb up some steps to reach it.

Favorite Dish: We had a nice cold beer and the "Plate of the Day" for lunch. It was a peppersteak and loads of vegetables and fries. Can you believe it? It only costed 3.50 Euros!

Funchal, the capital city of the island of Madeira, is a fascinating and unique town. This historic town, dating back 500 years ago, is now a vibrant and bustling centre. It's quite charming with its steep 16th century cobbled streets, elegant squares and smart colonial buildings. In one of these beautiful mansions the Café Escola de Conducao is situated..

Café Escola de Conducao is conveniently located at the city centre, facing the Praça do Municipio. It's a small, fancy looking café / restaurant specialized in Portuguese cuisine and authentic dishes native to the island of Madeira. The interior is wooden and it looks a bit like a countryside house. It's small, cosy and has an open kitchen.

Favorite Dish: Relinde had the specialty of the house, the delicious Peixe Espada Preto. I, for meself, had the poular Carne de Espeto, which was served on a skewer. It was great!
