Most Ancient European Towns Network.

So every now and then we end up at destinations we never thought we would end up. Béziers was such a destination. We stayed at Narbonne, a 35 minute drive away from Béziers and at some point we had to decide what to do with the day. We took our travel guide, read it and decided to go to this charming ancient village. And what a nice surprise it was indeed!

Dates back to 36 / 35 BC!

We both like to visit historical sites and cities, Béziers is the place to be. The city has been occupied since Neolithic times and Roman Betarra was on the road that linked the Provence with Iberia. The Romans refounded this particular city as a new colonia for veterans in 36 / 35 BC and called it Colonia Julia Baeterrae Septimanorum. Stones from the Roman amphitheatre were used to construct the city wall during the 3rd century. More than enough to explore!
