Queen Victoria Building: QVB - When it comes to shopping, Sydney has it all
  • Tip Rating:
  • Sydney Queen Victoria Building
  • An old picture of the Queen
  • Victoria Building.
  • by Jerelis

  • Name of Shop: Queen Victoria Building.

When it comes to shopping, Sydney has it all, like you can expect in such a metropolis. In the Central Business District (CBD) you'll find department stores like David Jones and arcades like Strand Arcade.

The Queen Victoria Building is an outstanding example of Byzantine architecture, which occupies an entire city block, was built in 1898 to replace the original Sydney Markets. Later it accommodated a concert hall and the City Library. In 1984 it was completely refurbished as a shopping centre, with more than 200 shops, a few bars and eateries. With its series of domes and domelets with exquisite stained glass windows and extensive wood panelling throughout it is a curiosity and therefore worth a visit.

Queen Victoria Building: QVB - A marvellous hanging clock.
  • Tip Rating:
  • Sydney Queen Victoria Building
  • The marvellous hanging clock inside
  • the QVB.
  • by Jerelis
  • Send Photo to a Friend
  • Name of Shop: Queen Victoria Building.

There is a marvellous hanging clock that displays a series of mechanically moving tableaux of British Kings and Queens every hour on the hour. This "exibition" is heralded by loud trumpeters and ends with the beheading of Charles I.

Permanent and temporary exhibitions have a home at different points on each level and include replicas of the British Crown Jewels and a highly ornamental, full-scale oriental coach. The building accomodates a series of royal paintings.

Queen Victoria Building: QVB - Most beautiful shopping centre in the world?

The building is a major attraction for both visitors and residents and is open every day! Shops with Old-Worlde shopfronts are located on three levels and here you will find some of the most interesting shopping in Sydney, shops such as New Guinea Arts, which has a remarkable array of native artefacts from New Guinea.

The people in Sydney like to call it "the most beautiful shopping centre in the world". Maybe we have to agree...

The Rocks: The Rocks - The best of the past and the present.
  • Tip Rating:
  • Sydney The Rocks
  • The Rocks and the Sydney Harbour
  • Bridge.
  • by Jerelis
  • Send Photo to a Friend
  • Name of Shop: The Rocks

Right at this location the first Europeans settled themselves in Australia. Therefore you will see a lot of old and historical houses, churches, etc. Also the oldest building in Sydney, Cadman's Cottage (1816) is located in The Rocks. It's also the entrance to the Sydney Harbour Bridge. You can find this at Dawes Point Park, which is the first fortification of Australia. The Rocks is now a leading visitor destination that combines the best of the past and the present. It's a must see.

Within 4 years of Sydney Cove becoming the forthest outpost of the British Empire in 1788, rows of convict-built dwelling lined the western slopes of the Cove. The first dwellings were built along natural rock ledges and were described as being "on the rocks"; giving rise to The Rocks name.

We walked through The Rocks for quite some time. It's a great place to look for souvenirs, but also for authentic jewelry, antiques, etc in nice specialty shops. We stepped back in time as we wandered the cobblestoned laneways, shopped in former warehouses, dined in historic cottages and were inticed by an outstanding array of contemporary art and craft, fashion and homewares.

If you want to have some good information about The Rocks before you start walking, you can get it at the Sydney Visitors Center in The Rocks (George Street).

What To Buy: It's a great place to look for souvenirs, but also for authentic jewelry, antiques, etc in nice specialty shops.

What To Pay: A little above average, but do look for the small and therfore not too expensive shops.
