Getting TO/AROUND: The Sydney Harbour Bridge is (with the Sydney opera House) one of Sydney's and Australia's most famous landmark. Completed in 1932, the construction of the bridge was and econimic feat as well as an engeneering triumph. The total lengt of the bridge is 1149 meters including the approach spans. It was not a cheap bridge to built. The total costs were 13.5 million Australian dollars and besides that the annual maintenance costs are 5 million Australian dollars.

Prior to the bridge being built, the only links between the city centre in the south and the residental north were by ferry or by a 20 kilometre road route that involved 5 bridge crossings. The bridge is known locally as the "Coat Hanger" and took 8 years to build, including the railroad line. Right now over 150,000 vehicles cross the bridge every day.

Getting TO/AROUND: We stayed with relatives during our time in Sydney. When we asked them how to get to the city centre they had only one answer: Sydney Ferries’ famous Manly Ferry is a "must do" for any visitor.

When we arrived at Manly Wharf we saw a brand new food and wine oasis at Manly Cove. We learned that ever since 1855 ferries have been sailing this route between Circular Quay and Manly. A ferriemakes the 30 minute trip regularly, day and night.

During our trip to Circular Quay we found out what our relatives meant by their answer. The route is spectacular and we agree with the statement: "And today, no visit to Sydney is complete without an excursion to the seaside suburb of Manly."

Airways / Airports: Sydney Airport - Only 9 km from the city centre.
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]

    Category: Airplane
Getting TO/AROUND: As we arrived to Sydney by air, we found out that Sydney Airport (SYD) was just 9 kilometers south of the centre of Sydney. This international airport is quite a modern airports and all kinds of facilities like bureaux de change, cash machines (ATMs), restaurants, gift, souvenir and duty-free shops, parking facilities and also at Sydney airport there is a choice of car hire companies.

When we arrived and left the plane we saw that the sign were pretty clear and were able to find our way easy. Finally some relatives waited for us to pick us up and they guided us to the entrance and we left by car. Once again we were surpised that such an international airport is only 9 kilometers away from its city centre.

Getting TO/AROUND: Unfortunately I didn’t get to fly on this native-Australian-style-decorated plane... but the plane ride concludes my time well spent in Australia during our trip.
