Never heared of it? | Wine ranks at the hills of Auen |
"Among medicines, wine is the most useful, among foods, the most pleasant" (Plutarch)
Never heared of it?
You've probably never heared of this very small village in Germany. Our first stop was in 1998, when we searched for a place to stay after a 1.000 km drive coming froim Austria. By accident we arrived in Auen en fell in love with it. Ever since we have used it for a place to stay for small holidays. |
| | Its history goes way back! Although Auen is a very old place, it started to develop itself in the 19th century when the vineyards promised to be a very good supplementary income. Before that the only income the people had came out of agriculture. The rich history is proven by a grain which was found here dating back to 1500 BC!
Also some stone hetches form approxemately 3500 BC are there and some other artifacts from the Celtic times. But the most impressive example of history is the Williges Chapel way back in the woods. The documents say that it's establised in 1128.
The Nahe Valley landscape has been cultivated since ancient times. In Celtic times grapes were grown here and in Roman times there existed a multitude of magnificent luxury villas with floor heating and large mosaics, which are without parallel north of the Alps. |
Not always Auen. A funny fact we learned during our wine tasting sessions was that the village wasn't always called Auen. This is what we learned. Let's hope that the dates are still in good order after a couple of wines :-)
1047: Auwen; 1488; dorf Awen; 1588: Awen; 1601: Village flax Awen; 1720: Gemeind Awen; 1731: Auwen; 1758: Auen. | | | The village seen from the Kaulenberg. |

breughel Mon Aug 10, 2009 17:53 UTC Indeed I never heard of that village but the Nahe wines were advised to me by a German business relation who was an amateur oenologist. | christine.j Thu Nov 23, 2006 20:48 UTC I must admit I had never heard of Auen before even though I've been in the area a lot. And now, after reading your very interesting page, I can't get the song "Jaeger aus Kurpfalz" out of my head... | deecat Thu Nov 16, 2006 17:23 UTC Lots of interesting and certainly new for me information. This is a real family page. Amazing how you travel so well with children. Hiking must be a real love for you and yours. Food sounds grand as does the wine. | tessy Fri Sep 29, 2006 23:01 UTC Never heard of that place. But it seems to be a real jewel off the beaten path! |
