" MBALE HEROES " Mbale by muguruki

Early on in the recent James Bond film Casino Royale there is a scene where a bunch of African rebels in army fatigues are based in a humid looking camp surrounded by thick jungle. Child soldiers with AK 47 draped over their shoulders are wandering around the rough camp when "Mbale, Uganda" is scrolled across the bottom of the screen. Its quite clear that the makers of the film have not been anywhere near this peaceful town in eastern Uganda in the shadow of Wanale a mountain that is actually a ridge of the much bigger Mount Elgon, with not a child soldier in sight.

You will probably end up passing through Mbale town if you are going anywhere in eastern Uganda. If you are travelling to Sipi falls, Moroto or Soroti chances are you will pass this way. A lot of traffic that now heads up to Lira, Gulu and Southern Sudan from Kenya now passes this way. Not far from the border with Kenya there are direct buses to and from Nairobi.

When I told a Bagisu waitress that I was going to Mbale after leaving Soroti. She said "Are you circumcised as it is your chance because this is the year for circumcision". For Bagisu blokes in this neck of the woods 'getting cut' is a serious business; and my friend the waitress was right the ceremonies only take place on even numbered years. You may well see gangs of people waving branches in the air as they march some poor young chappie covered in flour to where he is to have his 'minor' operation.

While I was in Mbale I kept quiet about the Bagisu Circumcision ceremony, as I wanted to leave Mbale with my foreskin intact. My eyes water now as I remember that waitress saying, "you know they don't use anaesthetic!"
