 Centre of town - Mombasa
Berachah Guest house: Centre of town

You can’t get nearer the centre of Mombasa than Berachah Guest house which is right across the road from the General Post Office. This bog standard typically Kenyan hotel has very small rooms it is so small that if you are travelling with your cat you will have to cut its tail off if you have any intention of swinging it in one of the Berachahs Self contained rooms.

It is possible to lock your door here with a padlock and I always feel safer doing that with my own lock.

It cost 900 ksh for a single self contained room in Feb 2011

Comparison: less expensive than average

Directions: On the corner of Digo Rd and Haile Salasie, opposite the GPO.

Entrance is on Haile Salassie and up the stairs

Price: less than US$20

 Much missed - Mombasa
Mvita: Much missed

The much missed Mvita Hotel.

Well missed by me and Chicken the other chap in the photo. I used to spend weeks in this place ……….or was it months, sometimes rarely going further than the bar downstairs. The easily missed doorway that housed the swinging saloon bar doors was the entrance to a great boozer. A typical caged Kenyan bar and a gaggle of middle aged Muslim barmaids serving a large number of Mombasa’s Muslim community male and female. It was a real mixed crowd in this boozer Indian Arab Swahili and the odd Muzngu like me and the Chicken.

A large part of the daytime was spent behind the Mvita hotel in the alley way watching Nuru cook up some amazing food on a 3 stone fire. Her mouth was as efficient at dishing out a constant stream of cheeky abuse in Swahili as she was at dishing out a constant stream Swahili dishes. I’m sure the only time she wasn’t speaking when she sat down with the rest of us to chew miraa.

Not happy with this place - Mombasa
Reef Hotel: Not happy with this place Reef Hotel Review
Show Prices

Only stayed here as one nights accomodation was included with the flight. Nice big pool, nice enough room but crap mosquito net that had huge gaps. Woke up with 18 mozzie bites in the morning. If I'd piad to stay here I would have been well unhappy.

 City centre cheapie - Mombasa
Hide Corner Park: City centre cheapie

Was a city centre cheapie with the best boozer in town for a day time scoop.

Not so cheap these days as prices in Kenya have really jumped or if you are coming to Kenya with a fistfull of £s prices are worse.

800 Ksh for a single room.

I only shifted here coz the place I was staying had a day of water problems but was glad when I could move back.

Bar downstairs is excellent.

Unique Qualities: The bar upstairs grinds to a halt around around midnight but it will only remain quiet untill about 6 in the morning when the cleaners start scraping the chairs and tables around just enough to make you feel that they are coming throught the ceiling.

Price: less than US$20

 City centre gaff - Mombasa
Royal Court Hotel: City centre gaff Royal Court Hotel Review

When all hell was breaking lose in Mombasa the Royal Court was safe as houses. The bar on the roof is a nice civilised place even if prices are a bit out of my normal price range. Shame the pool is so small.

This place at one time was a real nice hotel but saddly the Hermes is fading fast. The rooms are big but dusty and the lock on my door was very iffy! There was a hole in the bath whe5re there was once a tap and you couls see through this to daylight outside!

Best pool on the north coast - Mombasa
Mombasa Beach Hotel: Best pool on the north coast Mombasa Beach Hotel Review
Show Prices

I've never actually stayed at the MBH but every time I come to Mombasa I stay in a guesthouse in town and come to use the pool here. The reason I like the pool here is because it is a nice decent sized rectangular pool not a daft shaped pool that is impossible to swim in a straight line in.

Unique Qualities: The hotel is in a lovely spot on the cliff above the beach.

Address: North Coast, Mombasa.

Comparison: about average

Price: US$80-120
