Mombasa itself is an island only joined to the mainland of Kenya by a short causeway to the west a bridge over the creek to Nyali in the north and a short hop on a ferry to the south to Likoni.

To the north and south of the island are long stretches of beaches made up of soft white sand. Some distance out to sea you can see waves breaking at the point where sand bars and the coral reef is close to the surface of the water.

If you take a look at my Mombasa page you would be mistaken for thinking that I spend all my time on the beach. There is only so much slobbing on the beach that you can do, but if that is what you are going to do then there is probably no better place to slob out than this beach in front of the Mombasa Beach Hotel. The Mombasa Beach is a good old hotel with a nice rectangular pool so you can swim proper lengths up and down the pool rather than around concrete whales, plastic palm trees and under bridges.

It is a nice beach mind!

For me Mombasa is the town not the beach I just love the mix of the peoples on the coast of Kenya. The town is full of Indian influences as well as Arab, Swahili, and Bajuni. there are also a lot of up country Kenyans as well Immigrants from Kenyas close neighbours Tanzania, Uganda nad Somalia and completing the mix are the bright pink tourists.

Mlango Wa Kenya! Gateway to Kenya

Not only is Mombasa the gateway to Kenya but to a lot of East Africa. Container ships that dock in the port of Mombasa will be unloading goods that can end up in Uganda, Rwanda, and Eastern Congo.

Neil, Really liked your account, at first hand experience, of your time in Mombasa during and after the elections. You left it with a cliffhanger though - to be continued... Let me know if you get round to finishing it. Mike

I'll buy you a beer if you buy me a bacardi & coke. Looks great. You'll have to invite me along next time, mate!
