The Capital of Kenya was once called the green city in the sun, and then a lot of the green turned to rubbish strewn mud, crime rates got a lot worse and the town was renamed by some of the city's residents as Nairobbery. Not sure it is Nairobbery these days. Downtown Nairobi seems a lot safer than it has been in year’s gone bye.
A lot of this has got to do with the city council stopping bars from opening through the night. It only apears that a nightclub can stay open beyond the witching hour. Or if not quite a nightclub maybe a dodgy boozer with some bloke playing records. River road the land of the day and night club has changed, well I felt safe staggering out of The Good Hope Bar late at night.
I always thought that Nairobbery was a recent term for this fine city but a couple of months ago I read Black House by Paul Theroux a book that was written in 1974 where one of the characters refer to the Kenya capital as "Narobbery"!
A real Kenyan hero
I attended this rally in Uhuru Park in 1992. I honestly thought back then that Kibaki was the answer to Kenya’s problems. As well as Kibaki speaking on the dais that day there was also John Keen who was getting all the laughs a much better speaker.
This was not the only DP rally I went to. I happened to be in Watamu when Kibaki turned up for a much smaller rally. At the time Kenya was having a lot of refugees coming into the country from Somalia. Refugees were arriving on the Kenyan coast and were getting blamed by some of the locals for all sorts of things. Kibaki on this day was quite happy to play the race card and said "when we come to power we will send all the Somalis home"!!!

Great page Neil. I think I will pass on that haircut. The Nakumatt in Kigali is open 24 hours. Good grocery store.
Have just found the Supreme in Nairobi on Google. Looks like it's still going. Hope the food is still as good. Mike
