C'mon, take a risk or two!

USA OVERVIEW

West Palm Beach, Florida
It always disappoints me to see everyone from other countries flocking to the same tired tourist meccas over & over again: New York, DisneyWorld, Miami, Las Vegas, & LA. This is an amazing country, with such diverse terrain, so many glorious natural wonders, and a host of fascinating smaller cities. So I have made an effort to avoid creating pages on the same sights everyone else has already chronicled to death, with the one exception of my Las Vegas page (which is a bit different, if you’ve read it).

Hey, I can’t add much more to all of the great VT pages that already exist for those sites, so why bother!
Attitude Adjustment Boulevard, Daufuskie Island

It's really all in the details, you know!

Instead I want to focus on details I can supply that are a bit more specific, & on some of the smaller or lesser known locales. For example, have you ever heard of Daufuskie Island in South Carolina?

This is where Pat Conroy, one of our most prominent 20th Century novelists got the inspiration for his autobiographical book, "The Water Is Wide", while teaching in the tiny all-black school as an alternative to enlisting during the VietNam War. It was later made into the movie "Conrak" (filmed on nearby St. Simon's Island).

Just so you don't get confused if you read the book, Conroy used the ficitious name "Wamacraw Island" for Daufuskie. So come visit "Attitude Adjustment Boulevard" for a Gullah-style change in the Low Country.

Or how about Acoma, the fabled City In The Sky?

This is the living home of the Pueblo people of the southwest who are of the Acoma tribe, the "People Of The White Rock". Their simple & beautiful adobe homes look as if they've grown from the very rock on which they are built - which is the top of a mesa over 350 feet above the surrounding desert floor.

My tips for the USA are listed in alphabetical state order (even if there are several from one state), and linked to the pages for the specific locales. I hope you'll get some ideas for trips that wander off to the side on our smaller highways, to discover the real USA!

If I ever come to the US I'd rather see some of the places shown by you on your page than monstrous cities like New York. By the way, your pics are terrific.
