| | Tranquilo 'Welcome to Paradise' were the words of the purser when the plane circled the island just to stun us, priviledged tourists. I actually had to look and call for a taxi, a welcome change after the standard hassle you normally receive in Brazil, and, well, most countries. A taxi in Noronha is a buggy, as are most cars on this island. They are the best way of transportation (unless you can find a bike that actually works) and also provide about half of the population of this island with a job (renting, repairing). The rest of the locals either own a pousada (inn) or a restaurant. And let me assure you, everybody is doing a great job! |
Diving! Fernando de Noronha is famous in Brazil for being Brazil's number one diving place. This is mainly due to the water temperature: 28 degrees celsius(!), the visibility: up to 50 meters (I haven't seen more than 30 but ok) and the marine life. And indeed, in just 4 or 6 dives you can see turtles (tartaruga!), sharks, rays, octopus and some fish. And some more.... and more... | | |
| | Getting there / around There are two air companies flying to Noronha: Varig and Trip. You can fly from Refice or from Natal. You can take a package, which includes a buggy tour, an excursion to see the dolphins and your pousada. This package is obviously more expensive than taking care of things yourself. You will have to speak a bit portuguese though. The main drawback is that you will get second choice for diving, which means you will probably dive in the afternoon (which is less relaxed than diving in the morning). The buggy ride is more fun by yourself. It will cost 80 reais (27 euros) |
