Valparaiso is Chile's most enigmatic city. Most of the people that arrive here fall in love with it. It's something that should be seen, and maybe not because of it's steep slopes, colorful houses and wonderful people, but because of what Valparaiso stands for: poetry and culture.
Valparaiso is often called "La Joya del Pacifico" (Pacific Ocean's Jewel). The name Valparaiso is well put for this extraordinary city. If you break up the word VA AL PARAISO translates as "Going To Paradise". Most of the people that came here when Chile was discovered asked local travellers if they were going to paradise. If you say it in Spanish, and quickly, it reads like Valparaiso. Hence the name. And they were not wrong.
So, if you ever come to Valparaiso, try exploring the different hills, walking on those narrow streets and climbing the steep stone steps. You'll encounter a marvelous city, full of history and full of life. No wonder it's a Unesco World Heritage Site...
