Interlaken by car

Short visit

Stayed at Hotel Europa for one night near the Interlaken Ost train station. Drove from Lucerne and thought I'd have time to see Jungfraujoch and drive back to Lucerne in one day.
The drive to Interlaken was quite steep and hairpin turns. Having rented a 6 speed I had trouble holding the clutch when I encountered a slow uphill bus.
We didn't account for daylight savings time so it was dark by 5:15pm. It would have been dangerous to travel the road back to Lucerne at night. WE decided to stay one night in Interlaken.
After checking out a few hotels (you'd never know November is the low-low season by the rates) one desk clerk sent us to Hotel Europa. 140 swiss francs ($102) was the cheapest room we could find that had a private bath. Less than one mile from Interlaken Ost train station.
We walked in our room and forgot the key in the door. When we went to open the door we were locked in. We called the desk for the next 30 minutes and no one answered. The third floor room had no other exit. I felt a little panicky, but decided they'd eventually look for us and called one last time before sleeping. The desk clerk answered and came upstairs to let us out. She said they had to build the locks like that for fire regulations. I told her what if the fire was in my room and I couldn't get out? She agreed it wasn't a very good "system". Oh well....we became very careful about tracking our hotel keys after that. Otherwise it was a very clean, spacious room with new renovations.
