Thoughts of Brussels

The precisely stunning Atomium in Brussels, structured and built way back in the 1960s is a very good example of Brussels. The impressions I had of Brussels were as perfect, as modern and far up high from the day to day society such as the magnificent structure of the Atomium. This was not only my opinion about Brussels, being the Hub of the European Union it must have influenced me and lots of others to see Brussels such as the Atomium to the human's eye. I had to see Brussels for myself, from a different perspective than the political view which I have seen so many times on my local news and I have discovered that besides those modern, high, mirror walls in the EU area and Brussels being the capital of it all such as the Atomium is so unreachable yet reachable, Brussels is not just steel and politics, discovering the Atomium is just like discovering Brussels, there's a pumping heart of a lovely nation inside that's waiting to be discovered.

Reaching up to the Atomium, it felt like I have gone forward in time, discovered I could be scared of heights and what about those escalators oooh I had to sit down and wait until I arrive to the next atom, wondering it must have been so difficult to actually build up. The black and white pictures attracted my attention as soon as I got to the first atom and I suddenly forgot all about this modernly built structure and saw the people who have worked with almost little machinery to obtain this result. There is a video clip which one can see and tick, boom.. the atom comes to life when you see all of those men who have worked so hard to build this structure! Had not visited much of Brussels yet, inside those shiny disco balls there was light, life and music and it left me wonder around the streets of Brussels where people are really nice and modest, where they sell waffles and fries, love fish and muscles, where history in the Grand Place comes to life every night with the numerous tourists who have visited and fell in love with this city... Come and discover Brussels Disco Balls with me...

My stay in Brussels

I was staying at the Bedford Hotel, on Rue du Midi, quite central and only 5 minutes away from the Grand Place, 3 minutes away from the Mannekin Pis, somehow you can walk easily around the centre of Brussels no need for transport and all sort of entertainment from sight seeing to bars, museums to restaurants, everything is reachable by foot. I spent alot of the time on my own especially in the evenings and found it quite safe, you would still find one or two creepy guys who would follow a girl saying 'you're tres jolie' and all that but it is quite safe, besides, the streets are always crowded with locals and tourists this is also due to the fact that it gets dark as late as 10pm, except for when it rains of course, and in Brussels oh god it rains, I was told it rains 300 days a year, so I must have been lucky to be there on a day out of the remaining 60, still laughing out loud about it. So when it rains, the streets are bare, someone running across the street, probably on his way home and me, I'm standing there my face covered in Nutella, shopping bags and umbrella on one side and a warm chocolate waffle topped with straberries, banana and whipped cream, on the other side, as by then I had learned my way back to the hotel and at around 1am returning back to the Bedford, it was just me and my waffle.

In a week or a little less, If you plan well your stay in Brussels you will be able to see the main attractions and have enough time to explore it your way. During the day you can hop in and out from one museum to another, if you would like to shop take rue nueve as early as 10.30am, stop for lunch and you can continue shopping till they close or till you drop. Restaurants and bars are everywhere in the centre. I must admit that besides the Belgian beer, fries and chocolate or the famous waffles, for the first time on holiday I missed the food back home. All the food in Brussels somehow had to be fried and fried does not belong to my every day vocabulary. In the centre there are alot of Italian and Turkish restaurants, having turkish only when there is nothing better to eat or being such an Italian food lover as I am, I was not very pleased by the Italian/Turkish Restaurants in Brussels. The Belgian restaurants seemed to be empty, still haven't figured out why and Rue de Boucher, the waiting staff, did not impress me much. So 8/10 goes to the Chinese/Japanese/Vietnamise restaurants.

I have enjoyed all of the museums I visited especially the Musee de la Ville de Bruxelles where there is a Mannekin Pis costume exhibition. The churches are also interesting and I still remember mass at the church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine, its very small and there were only a few people for a saturday evening mass compared to that back home but the participants were all pationately and devotedly hearing the word of god to the contrary of the many in my country who does it as a weekly ritual with no devotion at all. I miss the evening light show at the Grand Place, had been there I would go find some space at the Grand Place and wait for 10.30pm that's when the show starts. I believe the best evening in Brussels was when I visited the Theatre Royal de Toone, whether you are a french speaker or not, a kid or an adult, you would love the puppet show here, would definetely reccommend it to everyone. You can finish your night by a drink or a dance at Place St. Gery, its mainly full of locals but also tourists. Lace is one of the souvenirs which you must bring home, prices vary and if you look around you will find some interesting pieces for sure. One last thing, there is no such 'No' to beer, ladies! cherry beer is So good, you must taste it, but be careful you might get used to having it instead of water!...

Memoirs of Brussels...

There are so many lovely things that remind me of Brussels. The live music in the streets, the light show on the guild houses at the Grand Place, the smell of chocolate waffles in the street, the taste of belgian fries with tartar sauce, the large choice of Belgian beers, the fountains of melted chocolate in the shops, the cute little boy who's always pissing, heheh the Mannekin Pis are all so beautiful memories that I have of Brussels.

Had there been a Fontana di Trevi in Brussels I would have definetely threw a coin...
