| | SYRACUSE: Samir's Import Foods If you want anything that is a departure from the norm, this is the place to go in Syracuse.
Syracuse, though fairly ethnically diverse, sadly does not represent it's population very well in regards to its restaurants and Shopping outlets.
There are several Italian import stores in the city... like there are in any small to medium sized city in New York( I am Italian, I have room to complain)... but this is my favorite import store in the area.
It is my favorite for several reasons. The first and biggest reason is that it is the only place in Syracuse that carries imported goods from the Former Yugoslavia. Though these are mostly Bosnian and Croatian, you can still find some Serbian and Macedonian goods here.
Aside from that type of thing, you can find many kinds of unique cheeses from Europe and the Middle East.
If you really want to see everything in the store, you should set aside about 3-4 hours... many things a buried and the layout is slightly chaotic. Once you go a couple of times, you will find it quite easy to navigate the merchandise. There is a rhyme and a reason to the layout... trust me.
PS. there is a huge selection of olives and fresh bread daily (usually pita and Yugoslavian flatbread). |
SYRACUSE: Onondaga Lake This is a picture I took on I-690 going about 70-75 mph.
Once billed as the most polluted lake in America...
Onondaga Lake, on the opposite shore (near present day Liverpool) was once a gathering site for the 5 nations of the Iroquios indians. It, because of it's salinity... almost, if not exceeding that of the Great Salt Lake in Utah is the reason for Syracuse's location. It's water was once evaporated and the resulting salt shipped far and wide via the Erie Canal.
If you were to evaporate this lake water today, you would be left with a carcinogenic cocktail, volatile enough to induce ALS, Parkinson’s Disease or any number of neurological ailments associated with Toluene, Benzene, PCB’s, Dioxin’s, Mercury, Lead and raw sewage that occasionally overflows the storm sewers in a heavy rainfall.
Don’t get me wrong, there are measures in theory and some in practice aimed at cleaning this once vital lake, but any real recovery is years away. When I was young, you were not even allowed to cast a fishing line into this lake for fear of contamination. For some odd reason, they had water skiing and hydroplane competitions without concern.
Now, you are allowed to go fishing I guess… but I think consumption of your catch is strictly forbidden.
So, to all you tourists… don’t go swimming.
| | SYRACUSE: Former Quality inn. Now??? This is a former Quality Inn. But in the past 15 years it, like so many things in this city has changed hands and names so many times.... Who cares.
As it stands, there is some non-descript symbol over the round tower. I have no idea what firm owns it... and I doubt I really care.
I wish i could give a more rousing and positive commentary about Syracuse... but it is difficult given the socio- economic climate. It still struggles as more and more people leave for the "greener grass".

ROCHESTER: I-390 south Coming south from the northern part of the city.
My objective is to go straight on 390 south, get off on 490 east and continue to I-90 east, or as it is known in New York, "the Thruway".
Homeward bound!!
The highways around rochester are in exceedingly poor repair. At least I-390 and parts of I-490 going through the city are.
