Kamnik is a lovely old town, surrounded by green hills and high peaks of Kamnik Alps. It is only 23 kilometres away from Ljubljana and no more than 15 kilometres away from the Brnik Airport.

In the Middle Ages Kamnik was a flourishing trading town with its own mint and some distinguished aristocratic families among its residents. It was protected by Stari grad and Mali grad, two castles, overlooking the town. From the hill beneath Velika planina, the church of St. Primož, well known for unique renaissance frescoes, was watching over the town. Exquisite architecture of old houses is not the only reminder of the glorious past; legends say that the bewitched countess Veronika, half woman half snake, is believed to be the guardian of the treasures of Mali grad. The legend was brought back into life in the comic opera Veronika that was performed during the festival, called "Medieval Days in Kamnik". The festival was a success because its medieval market and other events introduced Kamnik of the past, as well as of the present, with its flourishing trading and brisk life. In 1501 the town was even granted its yearly fair of St. Primož and Felicijan (9th June) by King Maximilian.

The most beautiful part of the town is, no doubt, its old town core with typical narrow streets, decorated by medieval and baroque facades of houses. Up on the hill, right in the centre of the town, there is Mali grad with its three - store Romanic chapel. Even higher above the town Stari grad, now in ruins, still watches over Kamnik. Among sights, worth seeing, there are two museums - the castle Zaprice and the private Sadnikar museum, and Franciscan monastery with a rich collection of old books and incunabula. Through history Kamnik has been quite successful in keeping its old idyllic look. Today it is also well known for tourist events, such as Dnevi narodnih noš (The National Costumes Festival). Every year in the beginning of September the festival transforms Kamnik into joyful town.
