J'adore Montréal... maintenant I love Montréal and try to get up there several times a year. But the first time I visited Montréal, I hated it! I mean, the scenery was great - cobblestone streets and European architecture. But people seemed to be so rude. It didn't help that my first impression was at my hotel. The receptionist refused to get off the phone once she heard me speak English and was rude checking me in.
In my wildest dreams, I never contemplated going there again. That was, until a long distance friend called to say she'd be visiting. Since it was within driving distance, I agreed to go. And that trip marks the beginning of my new found love for Montréal. |
| | Local Perspective I can't give the city all the credit though. It was my boyfriend's local knowledge that enabled me to appreciate the city as well. It was on a trip a year and a half ago that we met. And I had been trying to learn French ever since! :) Of course all good things must come to an end and we recently parted ways. But I plan to visit Montreal again soon, as I grew to love the city more than any other. |
Before you go.. Here's my general advice for Montréal: learn a few phrases in French before you go. Although almost everyone speaks English, they appreciate the effort. You'll have a better trip and let's face it - you're in their province!
In general, it is a safe city and I do not feel scared at night downtown. Be aware that St. Catherine's does get a little rowdy on weekend nights.
A few must sees/dos: *Jazzfest and tons of other summer festivals * The views from Mount-Royal park - nice panorama of the whole city * Olympic Stadium and the Biodome * Botanical Gardens - especially at the time of the Chinese lantern festival. * St. Josephs Oratory * Notre Dame Basilica * Walking tour of the Old Port * Schwartz's Deli - best Montreal smoked meat in town * Parc LaFontaine * Stroll Rue Prince Arthur and find dining outdoors * And my personal favorite - share an entire evening with friends or a loved one over cheese, meat and chocolate fondue.... yummy!

| Pros: | "Festivals, For Americans, it's Europe without leaving the continent, much safer than any american city" | | Cons: | "High taxes on everything you buy, subways close at 1am, oh yeah, and the bitter cold winters!" |
