Alpine Village in Northern Georgia

by MDPhotoSafari - last update: Nov 1, 2003

About Helen

Located in the mountains of northern Georgia, just two hours from Atlanta, is the Alpine village of Helen. Here the storefronts are postcard perfect, flowers abound, and shopping includes plenty of imported items. The town is small, traffic can be extremely slow, so your best bet is to walk around the downtown area.

Because of the size of the town, lodging is at a premium. There are several timeshares as well as hotel/motels, but you will need to book well in advance during summer.

Tubing on the River

Located on the Chattahoochie River, a popular summertime activity is tubing. Two local companys offer tube rental and transportation to the "drop in" point just out of town. Here you carry your huge innertube down to the river , hop in and float your way back. You go thru small rapids, and if the river level is low may need to get out occaisionally to move to deeper water. With an abundance of tubers on the river, sometimes it can get a little crowded but eveyone has a great time. As you reach town, you can stop off at one of the riverside pubs or restaurants for some refreshments. Just park you tube on the river bank and pick it up when you are ready to continue on.

Entertainment Options

Other activities include mini golf and a visit to the Bear Park is fun for kids and adults alike. Here you can feed the bears by dropping food down to them. They will stand on their back legs and catch it.

Cons:"Narrow main street and lots of traffic makes driving slow."
In A Nutshell:"For a different type of vacation, try Helen. Not a lot of activities"
