Pskov was one of the world's original great democracies, which most people don't know about. But go to Pskov, and they'll be sure to tell you all about it :-) ...at length, too.

While my friends and I were there, we did not see a single tourist other than ourselves. Everywhere we went, we were welcomed, and everyone was eager to share their lovely city.

Once Pskov was one of Russia's three great cities (Moscow and Novgorod were the others.) Much of the architecture and history of that time have been preserved and added to. It's doesn't have a hopping nightlife, but if you are looking for a relaxing and enjoyable look at one of Russia's less-known greats, I highly recommend Pskov.
