Madrid, Careful How you Say It....

by lareina - last update: Dec 24, 2004

Welcome to Madrid
Well, you don't say it like the capital of Spain (ma-DREED), nor do you say it like an American would pronounce the capital of Spain (ma-DRID). You pronounce the name of this funky town in a totally unique way, or locals might just look at you funny. It is pronounced MAA-drid. Really strange, I know, but that is how it is.

Visiting Madrid makes for a great half-day trip from Santa Fe or even Albuquerque. It is now a thriving artist's community and it used to be a mining town back in the day. The main (and only) street is lined with shops and art galleries. There are lots of fun painted mailboxes and unique decoration and coloring of buildings. The 'Mine Shaft' tavern is a good spot for local music.
