A contrasting place - bright, airy, almost weightless in design contrasts with the darker and older church in the marktplatz. Worth a visit to see and a description of recent reordering of the interior is interesting. Ornate and decorative features appear to have been removed, why who knows but it has the clean modern lines of a modern place of worship. No photos inside incidentally.
View of church from castle
Definitely worth a visit - the old church in the Marktplatz and the high climb to the tower. For one euro you can ascend the tower. You head up some nice wide spiral staircase but do not be deceived as when you think you reach the top you are then directed to another much more challenging staircase that lasts forever. Anyway the views at the top are worthwhile.
The view at 8pm
The funicular railway takes you to the view at the top. You buy the funicular tickets at the base station and can travel to the castle only or to the top. The pricing structure meant it was little more to the top but when we arrived at the castle, the weather moved in and although we hung on for better, we had to go to the top within the rain clouds or lose the chance of going up the railway altogether. so off we went.
You can see the pics to see the view in the rain. There is a cafe at the top and a very* small museum.
The weather cleared and we drove to the top later on. There is a fairly large car park which was empty in the evening.
a range of buildings
I think that you must spend time with a guide book/audio tour to get the most out of this building. The castle was built up over a number of years by different people all in different styles so there is a lot to take in. Just be careful that you don't get caught in the rain.
This main pic shows a number of different architectural styles on offer
THAT castle, Heidelberg
You have to go to the castle at Heidelberg. A few tips
1. Getting there - choose either by foot up hill or the funicular railway
2. You can look around the outside without paying to get in. This includes a large terrace and gardens. This would be ideal for an stroll in evening sunshine (if you are lucky).
3. You can spend around two hours here easily. There are a number of guidebooks on sale throughout the town and at the castle itself and or buy an audio tour in a number of languages.
Historical town centre is how Mosbach is described in the tourist info and this is a pleasant old town area. There is a signposted walking tour that takes you around the main spots with boards to describe the area (all in German). Tourist information was good but did not have a guide of the walking tour in English for me to enjoy but never mind.
The church in this pic is of particular note- split in two it is used by both R Catholic and Protestant denominations.
We gravitated to Mosbach on a number of occasions- a number of restaurants to choose where to eat, a couple of great ice cream parlours and the 'Famos' lido. There is also a good park nearby but we did not have the time to get there, too much to do.
We spent a short time in Buchen. The town centre is pleasant enough with a pedestrianised walkway tastefully mingled in with the old buildings. There is a museum there which cost about 3 Euros each to get in and shows some old style layouts of furnished rooms including a chance to photograph yourself in the wedding pose. A few rooms in the museum - good for about an hour or so. It shut about 4pm but the rooms were kept open by the staff to give us a few extra minutes who also gave us a bit of a guided tour to help translate the German info.
In short Buchen town centre pleasant enough but only for standard shops, nice museum, good for an couple of hours wandering around, a coffee and ice cream.
Adelsheim Lido - how brave am I?
Adelsheim is a town at the crossing of two of the more major roads - B292 and L519. We did not find much to do here in fairness but the swimming pool was great. There are a number of shops here for provisions and a couple of cafes which we tried out. A special mention must go to the people of Adelsheim. On our way in we got lost and stopped at a map in a local car park and a couple came over to help us out with directions and the lady in the bakery was very pleasant ans generous as she made some sandwiches for us one lunchtime.
The camera is far enough away for you not to be scared, I hope
No holiday is complete without swimming of some kind and there are plenty of open air swimming pools to choose from. The 'Famos' pool at Mosbach was a favourite of ours. Open from 9am to 8pm it was large enough to accommodate families and more serious older swimmers with a large pool, diving boards and slide. The entrance fee I thought low of 3 euros for adults for as long as you want. There is a lot of space here to relax out of the water and sunbathe.
My real advice is seek out these pools in the places close where you stay, I love a bit of splashing around just not when it gets too cold.
Directions: I could take you there but get a map from Tourist information.
Mosbach has some great wattle and daub buildings very well kept. There is a history walk marked through the old town with a number of stopping points-in German only :(- I really enjoyed strolling through the town, taking in the sites, a tour of the church and a coffee and ice cream at one of a number of cafes lining the walk ways.
Directions: 20 minutes drive east of Heidelberg.
