South Kordofan and the Nuba Mountains is one of the most beautiful areas of Sudan, and the scenery around Dilling, on the edge of the mountain region, is stunning.
At the time I went a ceasefire was about to be declared in the Nuba Mountains, for years one of the bloodiest regions of Sudan where some say a genocidal campaign has been carried out against the Nuba people. Unfortunately the route to the regional capital Kadugli, where I was hoping to get to, was closed to foreigners and I was refused access. So I had to stick at Dilling and then return home.
There is absolutely nothing to do in Dilling other than wander around the surrounding villages, talk to locals (many of whom are a bit apprehensive at seeing foreigners - certainly those arriving by bus!), and appreciate the scenery - a great contrast to life in Khartoum. I enjoyed it a lot but it's best as a stop-off rather than a destination in itself - nobody really comes here unless they're on their way to somewhere else. Dilling is very slow paced and dominated by bicycles, which are the main form of transport. It's a very relaxing place despite its location at the edge of a war zone. |
