Abu Noor's and nargileh

The most traditional thing to do at night is smoke an argileh (sheesha/water pipe etc) and Abu Noor's is one of the most well known. His new place is on the main street near Mary's Well - a bigger, noisier version of his old place, which is now under new management, in the old souk near the White Mosque. The souk one is much quieter and you're usually fed endless Om Khalthoum albums. The night's usually spent playing backgammon (shaish-baish) while puffing away.

At the other side of town the rooftop Bedouin Tent is newer and shinier and with a lot younger clientele. Only been there once and it felt a bit like a youth club and there's enough hair gel to make flies drop dead mid-air. There was even a (gasp!) woman there, although she was Russian and therefore I'm reliably informed doesn't really count.

If you want to smoke somewhere a bit more confortable and fashionable than the dedicated argileh places, then the best option is the wonderful Palestinian House (Beit al Philistine)
