Augustinerbrau Breweries and Beer Gardens Review

Just outside the old town, along the river, you'll find adjacent to a church the Augustinerbrau beer hall. Featuring beer brewed by monks and a great outdoor beer garden, this is a must see and must do. It's a traditional beer hall environment with community tables and lots of people picnicing on the food they brought. If you don't bring your own food, they sell pub-type grub, which is delicious.

From the old city centre walk to the river and turn left, heading uphill. After a ten minute stroll along the river from central Salzburg you will come to a church perched on the hill to your left, the monastery with beer hall is behind it.

When you arrive, take a one liter mug from the shelf and present it to the cashier who will take your cash and give you a ticket. Tell the cashier light or dark beer and giver your mug to the beer dispenser, who will fill it from the barrel. If you like, sit back and enjoy them rolling the barrels in and out.

Bottomline, the Augustinerbrau will be one of the highlights of your Salzburg trip.

Salzgammergut Salt Mines Review

The Salt mine district is beautiful and a site to see. Take a tour or drive to the Salzgammergut (sp?) and spend a day on the lake, walking around the cute little towns, meeting locals, and eating great Austrian cuisine.

Directions: in the mountains -- about 45 minutes to 75 minutes away

The Road Through Monchsberg The Mönchsberg Review

The road through Monchsberg is a must see and must walk. First, you enter it from old town and you'll walk by the major festival hall on the left and the old horse washing fountain on the right... then walking through it... straight through on the right path or meandering around with shopping on the left. On the other side is another great side to Salzburg that offers terrific cafes and shops. Plus, on the otherside of Monchsberg, after walking out of the mountain, head down a block or two and turn left and walk up the street to the Rainberg hill/mountain. If you look hard enough, you'll find a little walking path that seems to go up to a private house.... the path is actually a public path over Rainberg. On the other side of Rainberg is a nice little town/village and through that village is the street that takes you to Schloss Leopoldskron (about three minutes to your left).

Late evening stroll through altstadt Altstadt Review

Late at night -- between 10 and 12 midnight -- go for a stroll through the Altstadt. It is quiet and very few people are on the road. And it is very safe, so no worries. This will be your chance to see the shops and some classic sites with no interuptions, no tourists bumping into you and no loud noises. Plus, you may find a cafe open for some Gluhwein or Applestrudel.

Walk along the river

A must when you're in Salzburg is a nice stroll along the riverbank. The walk is beautiful with great scenery and new sites that are just a bit off the beaten path, plus you get great photo opps. In the summer, why not buy a wurst from the wurst stand at the main bus stop (hanuschplatz or something like that) and then sit down and have a mini wurst picnic along the river. A lot of locals picnic and read along the river in summer.

Residendz platz and American Express Residenz and Residenzplatz Review

Residendz platz is what I would consider the city center because you can see or reach all major attractions from this point. Mozart square and statue is visable. The American Express is in that square. Several nice cafes are visable from here. Of course, the castle and cathedral and St. Peter. Plus, you can see the horsefountain nearby. And then you have a huge chess game going on nearby too. Residentz platz is great. Actually, when I think about it.... anything could be considered the center of the city since everything is so close to everything.

Gorgeous Mirabell Gardens Mirabell Garden & Castle Review

The best time of year to see the gardens, I think, is late April, early May, when the flowers and greens are just blossoming. Plus, the high season for tourists hasn't started just yet, so you'll be able to walk through the gardens without bumping into 45 people. In the winter, it is still worth a quick visit because of the statutes and nearby architecture.

The hidden alleys and squares of Getreidegasse - Salzburg
The hidden alleys and squares of Getreidegasse Getreidegasse Review

These aren't as "hidden" as they sound. When walking along Getreidegasse you'll see little arched doorways to long halls and alleys with window glasses full of gifts and trinkets. Some of the alleys lead to other streets, some lead to restaurants and other shops, while others lead to cool little squares with restaurants, shops and pubs. In the winter, these are decorated very nicely.

View from near the cemetary - Salzburg

St. Peter's Cemetary Cemetery Review

This cemetary is an amazing site and not filled with as much sorrow as other cemetaries around Europe (like in Prague's jewish cemetary). The catacombs are magnificent.

Directions: Old Town, behind St Peters
