| Izmir bazaar many years ago... |
I grew up on the island of Chios which is opposite the Asia Minor coast, Cesme and Izmir. To visit Turkey is only 3/4 of an hour by boat. I visited Izmir in Turkey for the first time when 18 and had a lovely surprise. Just a step away from already westernised Greece a completely different world. The magical East!!! I loved the small meandering streets of the bazaar with all its colours and smells. I just could not have enough of the sutzuk and kaser sandwiches sold by street vendors, warm and tasty... yummy!!! I always took one or two back to Chios with me. I could not part easily with the taste. Being invited to tea at every shop, getting dizzy from smoking water pipe at Karsi Yaka, having a hammam and being washed and taken care by the experts. This was a REVELATION. I have been to Turkey many times since that first one, it never ceased to enchant me and captivate me like that very first time. |

I felt like I had gone though a washing machine! | Confucius Mon Mar 20, 2006 19:02 UTC I am not sure if Kusadasi will have any bald ibises, but I'll keep an eye out for any huge tortoises that might need a paramilitary rescue operation. I only have one day in Turkey, and so maybe just enough time for an elaborate steam bath. |
