Marquis of Granby: Chain restaurant, but good.

Yep, it's a chain restaurant, but the food was reasonable and consistent. I've been to the one in Bloomsbury and one on Shaftesbury Avenue and both had a nice, laid-back, old-fashioned feel. Also, they were very nice about us lounging around for several hours in the afternoon, nursing the same drink.

Address: All over the place

Comparison: less expensive than average

Price: US$11-20

Honest Sausage: Lunch al fresco Honest Sausage, Hyde Park Review

There are two Honest Sausage snack bars that I know of, in Hyde and Regent's Parks. I liked the location of the one in Regent's Park better; the Hyde Park one is a little too close to the street for my taste. Still, they were both good for a quick lunch on my way around the parks.

Favorite Dish: My sausage on a roll was pretty good, but I really loved the Owlet organic apple juice.

My Old Dutch: Pancakes My Old Dutch Review

The atmosphere reminded me of a diner, brightly lit and unassuming. The menu is almost exclusively pancakes, sweet and savory. However, if you are dying for pancakes (hard to find among the multitudes of places serving English breakfasts,) you can't beat this place-- any time of day. Also, it makes a good place for eating alone-- a friendly but unofficious staff, no romantic lighting, plenty of table space to pull out a book or write out postcards.

Favorite Dish: If you don't mind looking unadventurous, go for the pancakes with maple syrup and butter. However, the savory pancakes, particularly the duck one, looked pretty good as they passed my table.

One note-- these are not American-style pancakes. They look more like large, unfolded crepes. Absolutely yummy!

they're called crisps!! - London

they're called crisps!!

Not Chips Here

Americans wanting chips had better remember to call them crisps. The best thing about crisps are the unusual flavors-- such as prawn, cracked pepper and steak flavors.

Brightly colored soups - London

Brightly colored soups

The Stockpot: Brightly colored soups Stockpot, Soho Review

Great place to eat if you are travelling on a student or backpackers budget. Cozy, kitchen decor, friendly staff and a nice-sized meal at a very good price.

Favorite Dish: The veggie soup was good (despite being an odd shade of green). I also recommend the gammon ham (a little like the American ham steak, only more fatty.)

Address: 38 Panton Street

Comparison: less expensive than average

Directions: Between Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square, although I think there are several locations.

Price: less than US$10

tea for two - London

tea for two

Tea for Two

When in England, you really need to have afternoon tea. Yup, I know it's more of a tourist thing now than a real London custom. Still, its a nice way to unwind and, let's face it, dessert foods before dinner are always a treat.

Directions: Available almost anywhere, but this tea was taken at an outdoor table in a cafe across the street from Harrods.

Price: less than US$10
