The botanical gardens are really amazing, with a swan pond and simulated rain forest as well as various subsets of gardens scattered throughout including a garden expressly dedicated to members of the ginger family. Perhaps the most famous is the Orchid garden, with Orchids from all over the world in a variety of climates including a "cloud" forest. Give yourself a whole day for this one, or check the local guides for events.

A great place to sample not only the wares of the Chinese, but the diversity as well! Fabulous food, and if you go during the Chinese New Year festivities like we did, you'll get to see quite a few performances on the streets. Definitely a good place to wonder about and let things surprise you. We picked up a good number of souvenirs as well as a new hand tailored suit for Stephen of amazing quality from Master Hand tailor. Within Chinatown, be sure to keep a look out for temples, as they're tucked in corners just off the main thoroughfares.

From the hisotry walk that begins off the Clark Quay entrance, to the Spice Gardens, archeology dig in the middle, and old cemetary lawn, Ft. Canning Park is a great way to get an idea of where Singapore came from and how it has shaped the rest of the city. A beautiful walk in it's own right, with plenty of diversions along the way. It's a kind of showcase of the diversity that is Singapore.

Jurong Birdpark: The wonderful world of birds

If you're a bird lover or even just curious, defintely check out Jurong Bird Park. A little out of the way of the city center, but well worth it! They have birds from all over the world, and of course the Waterfall Aviary is not one to miss. Like the zoo, the animals here are very well taken care of and healthy creatures. Great for kids and adults alike. Do be warned though, that the individuals who feed the animals wear while polo shirts, so if you wear one (like Stephen did by accident) you may get some rather persistant attention.

Easily one of the best zoos in the world, The Singapore Zoo focuses on natural habitats and free-ranging where safe. There are very few cages as such, instead they rely on "natural" barriers, such as moats (with water and without), tree and brush lines, etc to keep the various animals in their little areas, and many are allowed completely free reign of the park (some monkeys, most birds, some reptiles, etc). Also, usually, more than one type of animal exists in each area, giving it more of a biosphere feel. This concept does two things: 1) lets you get very close to the animals, but still stay safe; 2) Keeps the animals happier--even the big cats looked content. Unless you are traveling with small children, I suggest by passing the tram tour and just footing it. You'll see more this way, and the tram doesn't provide any "special" information, in fact you'll miss out on quite a bit by not being able to explore the nooks and crannies of this fabulous place. Defintely check out the Orang Utans & Elephant complex.
