galata tower: Galata Tower
  • Tip Rating:
  • When you arrive in Istanbul, you will feel disorientated. A good way to solve this problem is climbing the Galata Tower and have a view over the city in all directions. Open every day from 9am till 7pm.

The Galata Tower, 62 meters high, is one of the oldest in Istanbul. Build in 528 as part of the fortification of the city.

These days it's a tourist attraction: there's a restaurant and a nightclub now (for who likes turkish folk dance and belly dance). Restaurant and club are open daily from 8pm till midnight.

At the right is the Bosphorus Bridge. With its 1560 meters, it's one of the longest suspension bridges in the world. It connects Ortoköy and Beylerbeyi.

Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet ): Blue Mosque
  • Tip Rating:
  • What can I say? So much is written about the Blue Mosque. Let me just say that it is one of the most beautiful religious buildings in the world.

Unfortunatelly you need a very good camera to make good pictures inside.

In the evening the mosque is lighted.

Egyptian (Spice) Market: Enjoy the smell of the herbs and spices
  • Tip Rating:
  • I have something with colours, smells, feelings. So, defenitely the Egypt Bazaar was a great experience for me.

The Egypt Bazaar has gotten its name because it was build with tax money on Egypt import. It was build during the 17th century. Istanbul was the perfect location for this market because its location between the East and West.

    Things To Do: Basilica Cistern
  • Tip Rating:
  • This underground cistern is one of the most romantic places in town. It has a mysterious atmosphere.

This cistern was made to supply water for the Great Palace.

Walking there is a great experience: dropps falling on your head, classical music playing,.... The Byzantine architecture is well preserved. There are 336 columns.

    There's a little bar inside.

    Things To Do: Medusa Head
  • Tip Rating:
  • Inside the Basilika Cistern (Yerebatan Sarayi), you'll find two colons resting on Medusa heads. The one head is vertical, the other one upside down. Some people think they belonged to a sanctuary for water nymphs.

One thing is sure: they are very beautiful to see.

Things To Do: Egyptian Obelisk on the Hippodrome
  • Tip Rating:
  • From the original hippodrome, build in the 3th century BC, only a few monuments are left. You'll see 3 colons there in what is now a nice parc near the Blue Mosque.

On the picture is the Egyptian Obelisk. It stands on only four little stones and nobody knows how the huge and heavy obelisk ever got there. Even the heaviest earthquake couldn't destroy it.

Asian side: Relaxing at the Asian side
  • Tip Rating:
  • I went to Üsküdar just to have been in Asia. With good company, you can sit there for a while enjoying the view. But if you like, there are some mosques to visit there too: Semsi Pasa mosque, Iskele mosque, Yeni Valide mosque and the Atik Valide Mosque.

Hi Kris. The Black Book is one of my favorites. You had a good reason to travel Istanbul.
    Gokcecicek Fri Oct 13, 2006 08:19 UTC
Hello Kris, I started Pamuk's books with "White Castle" which I did not like. However I was fascinated by "My name is red"... Maybe you can meet him again this December. Who knows?
