Toronto: a pristine world class city

Bring your walking shoes

Canada's world class answer to New York, London and Sydney, Toronto is a clean, friendly and multicultural metropolis offering a plethora of experiences. Above ground, Downtown is a sea of modern skyscrapers topped by the landmark CN Tower, the world's tallest free-standing structure. Here, elevators whisk visitors high above city's the tallest buildings to a glass-floor observation level. Below ground, Downtown features an extensive network of walkways lined with shops and eateries that connect blocks of office buildings and hotels. This Underground allows residents to explore the core of their city comfortably even in the thick of winter. Overall, Downtown is very clean, safe and walkable. In fact, the best way to see it is by foot, walking not only throughout the central downtown area but also in the surrounding neighborhoods of Chinatown, Kensington Market, Yonge Street, Bloor Street, the University of Toronto, and the Harbourfront.

Passenger ferries embark from the Harborfront to take a scenic trek to the
Toronto Islands. Located a short distance into Lake Ontario, the Toronto Islands offer landscaped parklands, an amusement park, beaches and other recreation areas in addition to the best skyline views in the city.
Given the city’s large Chinese population, Chinatown offers an authenticity and cultural immersion that will make any visitor really feel as though he or she is actually in China. Even street and store signs are emblazoned with letters of the Chinese alphabet.

Nearby, tony Bloor Street offers an upscale showcase of high end stores like
Tiffany & Co. contrasted with Honest Ed's, a gaudy, over-the-top store that sells all kinds of interesting gifts.

On the other side of the Central Business District, Yonge Street sparkles as a mini Times Square with its oversized signs, unique shops and Broadway-style performance
theaters. It is also one of the cross streets along which Eaton Center is located. Eaton Center is a multi-level megamall connected with the underground and situated in the heart of Toronto.

The
Metro Toronto Zoo, located several miles northeast of downtown in Scarborough, is also a multiple day destination in itself.

Great Toronto page and tips. About the cold water... once you're numb, you don't feel a thing. That's basically how we survive winters here - that and many layers of clothes, and the downtown tunnels.
