Flagler Beach, a charming seaside community between PALM COAST and DAYTONA BEACH, is a rare example of living Old Florida nostalgia. I have rolled through here on several occasions, either to make a fun pit stop, or just take a more scenic alternative to I-95 when traveling between JACKSONVILLE and various locations in Central Florida. Centered around a quaint fishing pier that displays a signature "Flagler Beach" sign, the town is a place where tiny "mom and pop" motels -- once the predominant form of accommodations for Florida tourists -- still beckon travelers along A1A without being choked out by the mega chains. Additionally, development is confined to the west side of A1A through Flagler Beach's main stretch, giving motorists a rare view of the light blue sea as they casually cruise by. The beach itself boasts an unusual orange-peach shade of sand, adding to the town's uniqueness.

Overall, Flagler Beach is little more than a nostalgic beach town, and that seems to be exactly what brings back visitors each year. Even if Flagler Beach doesn't tickle your fancy as a "destination" it certainly offers travelers a scenic, almost forgotten place to stretch their legs, wade in the surf, and stop for lunch. I have eaten at the restaurant at the Flagler Beach Pier and found it to offer inexpensive "mom and pop" dining with an oceanfront view.
