Northwest of
Jacksonville and several miles west of
Interstate 95 in
Nassau County are a couple of small towns surrounded by acres of farms and country homes. The most important of these towns,
Callahan, sits at the nexus of
US 1 and
US 301 and boasts a small downtown district of archaic buildings and modern fast food joints. It also is one of the places mentioned in
Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, a staple of many school reading lists.
I have only taken one trip through Callahan on the way to and from
Connor's A-Maize-ing Acres Farm. Connor's, located several miles west of Callahan, is a popular field trip destination for school children. Featuring a
corn maze,
hayrides,
kiddie barrel rides,
large slides and
barnyard animals, Connor's offers an escape to a rural way of life and recreation often overlooked in the midst of Florida's urbanized and water-centric communities.
