Between the city and the country

Looking across the Mississippi River from Memphis, Arkansas looks like an inviting, undeveloped expanse of green. Just a little ways west of the river, however, I-40 takes motorists through West Memphis, a busy town with a gritty, blighted collection of gas stations and other highway businesses lining its front door. I suspect that West Memphis is a popular fuel and bathroom stopover for east-bound travelers who are concerned about taking their chances with a pit stop in the big city, and for west-bound travelers concerned about not finding a place to stop at all in the miles of rural farmland that lie ahead. Here is where we stopped to refuel, in fact, for our drive across most of the state.

I-40: West Memphis to Little Rock

For the next X miles, I-40 arcs its way southwest, past a relatively flat region of pastures and fields that fuel Arkansas’ agricultural industry. The highway largely avoids commercial areas, aside from a few exits offering the pit stop essentials, until it makes a final approach to the outskirts of Little Rock, the state’s attractive, centrally-located capital and metropolitan hub.
