Lalibela was our favorite destination in Ethiopia. A very short flight from the hustle and bustle of Addis Ababa brought is to a brand-new airport about twenty miles from Lalibela. The Ethiopian government is really gearing up for tourists: all the airports we used in Ethiopia were either new or being renovated.
At the airport, we pick up our bags, go outside, and... where is a taxi? A donkey cart? Any mode of transport? Nothing. But the driver of a group of NGO workers offers us a ride into town. He also happens to know someone who just opened a guesthouse, and he wondered if we would like to stay there. We were a little leery of accepting his offer, but the Jerusalem Guesthouse turned out to be great. We had a wonderful view over the valley.
