Togo is a strange little country. It has a coastline of barely 25 miles, but extends inland for over 200 miles. Along the coast there are several old colonial towns; inland there are remains of German hospital stations from the brief period of German colonization. Lomé, the capital, has a lonely feel to it. The government buildings, all abandoned except for armed guards, are riddled with bullet and mortar holes. They haven't been used in ages, at least for their intended purposes. We hadn't really intended to go to Togo, but the only way to fly to Nairobi from Niamey was to go overland to Lomé and fly from there. We had several days to laze away here before our flight.
