My first solo trip and my best so far. Have very fond memories of Beirut. Being on the plane solo ensures you get fussed over- more out of curiosity, concern, admiration, et al. You get flight attendants coming to your seat before you even think of asking for anything. Going through the customs checkpoint at 7am sees a lot of customs officers congregating around you wondering what you were up to in Beirut. The safety of the place- I see chador-clad women walking through lonely streets alone at night, the hospitality of people, the vibrant nightlife(although with the de riguer snob appeal most regularly associated with the posh clubs), the crisp winter air, the sunset on pigeon rocks, the morning kebabs in the neighbourhood, the really cute guys who think they're God's gifts on earth, the buses, the ironic cityscapes that sees bullet-ridden buildings co-existing with posh restaurants and clubs a street away, the really helpful owner, Michel of Pension Al-Nazih, the wonderful people I met and the great time I had. |
