Introduction

Whitby is a small town off the North East coast of England. It's a regular favourite of ours, and we have visited many times when staying nearby.
The place has an interesting feel - particularly if you go during one of the twice yearly 'Goth' weeks (for those who don't know a Goth is a person who dresses up in black clothes and is partial to piercings and all things Dracula like!).
On the cliff looking over Whitby are the ruins of Whitby Abbey. Next door is a very old and somewhat spooky church - especially in the dark. This location is said to have provided the inspiration to Dram Stoker to write the classic horror story of Dracula.

When we visit we tend to park in the car park at the top of the steps next to the Abbey - that's a great way to arrive and offers the view on this page.

Pros and Cons

Pros:Character, alternative types, harbour, atmosphere.
Cons:Can get very busy during the summer months.
In a nutshell:If you want a seaside town with buckets of atmosphere, don't miss it.
