San Diego, my temporary home

Jewel of Southern California

Balboa Park Central
Some say San Diego is a smaller version of LA. I don't agree. San Diego is unique in all of California so far as topography and the climate is also special. You can go from heavy fog to bright sun shine in the space of five miles.

The freeways are a **** and the place is way over developed, but you can still find nice quiet neighborhoods with small California bungalows. Unfortunately there are many small multistory apartment buildings that have been allowed to intrude in the neighborhoods so some streets look haphazard and not all the buildings are well maintained.

Balboa park and the famous San Diego Zoo are urban gems.
HMS Surprise

Maritime Museum is Marvelous

Check out the sailing ship Surprise used in the filming of Master And Commander. This is one of as many as 5 or six sailing vessels tied up at the dock. You can spend many hours visiting this remarkable museum.
3:00 PM in the afternoon

San Diego Burns - 2003 fires ravage wildlands

By the second day of the wildfires the soot and ash from the fire were drifting up in piles. The sky was the color of an orange and people were driving with headlight on at 3:00 pm in the afternoon. It was a scene from hell.
