Brief early history of KNP

The first explorer to this territory was a Dutchman by the name of Franscois de Kuiper who led a Dutch East India Company (VOC) expidition to the area. His expidition was however attacked by the local tribes and abandoned.
In 1838 a Voortrekker (pioneer) expidition lead by Genl. Louis Trichaard and Hans van Rensburg established the first outpost in the region.
Hundreds of Europeans and farmers later flocked to the Lowveld in search of Gold and Ivory and this lead to the wholesale destruction of wildlife in the area.
Fortunately Paul Kruger, President of the boer republic Transvaal was able to persuade the Transvaal parliament to establish a protected area for wildlife and the Sabie Game Reserve was proclamed.
Over the years additional land was included and developed into what is known today as the Kruger National Park.
