Pommersfelden

Church Steeple in Pommersfelden
Pommersfelden is a tiny little town located in the upper Bavarian region known as Franconia. It's surounded by farmland and just so happens to have a castle next door.

I lived there for a month while playing in the Collegium Musicum Schloss Pommersfelden, which is a four week orchestra and chamber music program for college-age people held at the castle.

Music at the Castle

In 28 days I played 17 concerts! I had never done anything like that before, so it was really hard at first, but after the first week, I got a lot more used to the rigorous schedule.

We had 5 days to rehearse for our first concert, and we were playing Mahler's 5th Symphony! I really loved playing that piece, but the conductor did leave a little to be deisred. I think I had the most fun playing in the chamber groups, like the Mozart Divertimenti I played with Kati and Balthasar, or Francaix's Le gay Paris.

We also played for fun at events like the Fireworks concert, where we performed Handel's Music for the Royal Fireworks, complete with a real live firework show behind the stage and at numerous parties, like the party we had for the kitchen staff.

The Collegium Musicum is not only held at the castle, the participants also live in the castle. Living there was an amazing experience, especially when selective memory allows me to forget the Liver Soup (!) and the 92 stairs to the bathroom.

Pros:"Not overrun with tourists, boasts a castle with an impressive art collection."
Cons:"Very small, and a bit out of the way."
In A Nutshell:"Tiny, but charming."

Nice page on a great off the beaten path - destination. I got married there in 2005, in the palace chapel. Bamberg was cool, too - I lived there for some years.

'very talented young musicians' well done. Lots of good work and and great way to introduce yourself to Deutschland ... even with the lake dog keeping everyone on their toes.
