Amsterdam... the city of smoke, canals, cycling...

by mollymoo0oo0 - last update: Jan 14, 2008

A haZy weekend

Juan and I turned up in Amsterdam to celebrate our first 6 months together. We booked the flights and decided to find our accomodation there, which we managed well through the tourist office at the train station. This led us to a lovely little boat hotel, which was perfect for our stay - a base to rest our heads for the night.

I must admit, there was a less significant exploration of this town than most I visit, since we made a few stops at the coffee shops here.... narrowly avoiding the really touristy ones, and diverting from the red-light district which quite honestly felt a little uncomfortable (thanks to the large groups of men gathered in the streets and gauping at the ladies).

I have a fond memory of a coffee shop called the Greenhouse Effect, with wonderful bamboo decor and big green plants throughout. Nice cakes too!! When we bored of chilling out, we took a canal boat to the Anne Frank Museum. This was quite fascinating, a museum of the house where Anne Frank and her family hid away for so many years, while she wrote her now famous diaries. The house seemed to be extremely popular... and with the narrow staircases that feature so much in the city, this left one-way traffic travelling at a snail's pace throughout. Definitely worth a visit though.

Upon leaving the house, we discovered that the canal boat bus had finished for the day... we spent a fair time wandering around before giving in to taking a cab ride back to the hotel... the streets all looked the same! But they are beautiful with their many canals running through... I would consider returning for another visit with more exploration of the museums and other offerings available... especially Dutch apple pie and pancakes!!

Pros:"Pancakes, Dutch Apple Pie, Coffee Shops"
Cons:"Lots of junk food, was often difficult to find something nice to eat (apart from the above!)"
