Restaurant Name: ChessCafe
ok, so this place will certainly not give you a taste of traditional Spanish comida... but if you want a change from that it will give you some fun alternatives!!
Its menu spans big Chessburgers with funky fillings, great ensaladas big enough for a meal, tasty sandwiches, lots of muffins/donuts/chesscakes... all washed down with 'the best orange juice in madrid', a craZy choice of batidos (milkshakes) or something from the bar :)
veggie options are plentiful here, including salads, bio-pittas and more...
and a real fun vibe - with a creative menu to match.. the place is popular, so service is not always instantaneous (it's worth the wait!)
also could be good for families - not only for the fun vibe, but the helium balloons and other paraphernalia available to buy!!
Favorite Dish: My favourite has to be one of the chessburgers... just difficult to choose which one. Possible the beefburger with feta cheese, or the chicken burger with pineapple/cheese/tomato....
I love the huge, ice cold OJs - can drink them all day... and would have to finish with a chesscake, yummy!!

Restaurant Name: La Margherita
Summertime and evenings are the best for atmosphere at this Italian pizzeria... there is a huge terraza space along a main esplanade which great for people watching.... children playing ball, cycling, neighbours gathering to chat outside.... a great opportunity to see how los madrileños take advantage of their warm climate and streetlife.
With great olives, to start, the pizzas here are delicious and generous ensaladas (salads) are great to share. Service is always attentive. Take away is also available, which includes a free drink for each pizza or salad ordered. Prices are around 8€ per pizza and 7€ per salad.
Favorite Dish: The rucola (rocket) pizza is delicious and bursting with flavour.
It has tomate, mozzarella, berenjena, calabacín, queso parmesano, cebolla y rucola. (tomato, mozzarella, aubergine, courgette, parmesan cheese, onion and rocket).
Also well worth trying if you are a cheese fan, are the calzone pizzas, which are basically folded pizzas. Available with mixed cheeses and with/without ham.

w0w! A nice little treasure of trove of deliciousness is to be found in this place, quietly tucked away down a street near to El Retiro....
Definitely recommended to book in advance, certainly at weekends.
Favorite Dish: Without a doubt, carnivores should head for one of the various burgers.... which will appear big and juicy, and undoubtably satisfying! They are rightly rumoured to be the best in Madrid, by los que están en el ajo (those who are in the know)
There is also a tempting range of desserts waiting to be sampled :)

Restaurant Name: La Catrina
This is a great little cove in heart of the Malasaña, with typical bright and fun decoration that is often to be found in the Mexican restaurants here. Friendly vibe, with a small bar plus separate room with tables if you want to sample the delicious food.
Favorite Dish: Great mojitos, decent nachos and a few other tasty snacks here.

Restaurant Name: ¡Viva La Vida!
w0w, this place is great!!
For veggies and meat-eaters alike, there's bound to be more than something to whet your appetite here...
It's a a simple self-service system... grab a plate and cup.... pile on a bit of whatever takes your fancy (I find this bit difficult to restrict!!). The food is charged simply by weight, according to the cashier at the end - watch out, however, it can easily add up!
Drinks here are great too.... a selection of freshly made juices, and even some organic beers and frozen mojitos (very refreshing indeed!)
The decoration inside is absolutely beautiful... with plenty of vibrant colours and attention to detail. In fact, I vote this place as having the best-looking toilets in town!
There is seating available outside, although I recommend a trip downstairs, if only just to see the wonderfulness of the dining room decor.
Finally, the music here is always great and lively... as the name says - "Live Life!"

Restaurant Name: El Pico
Pleasant tapas bar with a lively atmosphere, great tapas.... best to be shared (though you may find it hard to resist ordering more and more!!).... Friendly, helpful, and attentive staff too!
Favorite Dish: I have been here on a couple of occasions, and all the food I have tried was delicious, but I particularly enjoyed the albondigas (meatballs), which are of course wonderful washed down with a nice vino tinto - I went for the Rioja - a particularly enjoyable one too.
