Bangkok is called the City of Angels but there's little that is angelic about it. Although some travelers may find the shopping venues and notorious nightlife heavenly.
The city does have an almost mystical feel given its hundreds of beautiful temples and shrines, the detailed craftsmanship and intricate designs are admirable and very unique. One can definitely sense that religion (predominantly Buddhism) plays a large part in everyday life. Its an extremely tolerate city (too tolerate in certain instances) and it is safe to say the concept of being "in the closet" is alien.
Unfortunately, a traveler that only visits the touristy spots may get a false impression of the city and its people...a venture to the more local areas reveal a much more modest and less commercial way of life. |
| | Bangkok probably offers one of the best shopping experiences anywhere. The wide variety of goods and very reasonable prices are a big draw and there are opportunities to shop literally around every corner. Some popular shopping venues: Gaysorn-window shopping at its finest MBK-something for everyone Chatuchak-vast acres of shops and stalls Pantip Plaza-known for its electronics and software, including many pirated DVDs, PC games, etc. Central World Plaza-formerly called the World Trade Centre, has a very modern theater and ice skating rink Pratunam Market-best known for clothing and textiles |
| | With the poor air quality due mainly to climate and low grade gasolline, an escape from the pollution can be found in Lumphini Park. Although it isn't the most impressive, it is a nice place to relax and enjoy the city scenery. |
